images as evidenceThis is a featured page

Are your images your evidence?

When preparing your image for publication, treat it as data. This table tells you what you can do to the original file that will maintain the integrity of your image.

do!DO:

don't! DON’T:
save an unaltered original of the image remove dust or scratches
resize change colors
scale dodge/burn
crop increase contrast
draw circles and arrows
for points of interest

save as a different file type
note any changes to an image in a footnote or in your findings
adjust contrast of entire figure to make it clearer

If you alter an image, note it in a footnote or add it to your methods or findings section. Be prepared to present a copy of the unaltered original to the publication editor if he requests it.

I see that "adjusting contrast" has shown up in both the "do" and "don't" columns. Would adjusting contrast ever be viewed as deceptive, or is it common practice? I'm not sure what to think about it.
